Cierra Brown Bolts for Two State Titles

Senior Cierra Brown hurdled her way to some new gold hardware at the Division II state track championship meet June 2, taking home two individual titles from Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at Ohio State University.

After breaking district and regional records in the 100 meter high hurdles and 300 meter hurdles events, the Purdue University signee put it all together to finish first in both state finals Saturday. Eagles teammate Camille Dickens — a soon-to-be Buckeye — followed her up at the finish line, crossing three tenths of a second behind Brown in the 100 meter race. She also placed second in the long jump.

“Cierra just hits the track and she is focused,” said head coach Jerry Puckett. “She is an excellent example of commitment and hard work.

“Camille has improved so much from a season ago and had a great, great year,” Puckett said.

The Big Ten bound duo (pictured above) comprised half the backbone of this season's super successful CJ women’s track team along with fellow senior Allie Coleman and junior Devanae Mitchell. The foursome, which finished eighth at the 2011 state championship, helped lead the Eagles to a second-consecutive OATCCC indoor state title and a fourth-straight GGCL championship, in addition to 2012 district and regional titles.

“We started at the end of last year preparing for this state championship and the girls worked hard, especially in the weight room,” Puckett said. The Eagles finished third overall with 43 team points.

Mitchell, one of 22 underclassmen returning next season, finished fourth in the long jump and seventh in the 100 meter dash.

Brown is the school’s second consecutive hurdler to win an individual Division II state title. Bryan Cain '11 won the men’s 300 meter hurdles event last season as a senior.
