Ohio Lt. Governor Visits CJ to Learn About City Connects

On Friday, May 17, 2019, state officials including Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted, Ohio's Superintendent of Public Instruction Paolo DeMaria, Charlotte McGuire of the State Board of Education, District 3, State Senator Peggy Lehner, and State Representative Niraj Antani visited Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School to learn more about the school’s City Connects program. The program, which serves all students at CJ to provide them the most enhanced and engaged high school experience, has been at the school since the 2010-2011 school year. This is when Chaminade Julienne worked with Boston College in piloting the program for high schools, developed from the elementary school model.

“City Connects works at CJ because we have such a tremendous assets within the community,” said CJ principal John Marshall ‘86.  “It helps us organize through resources and prioritize what we focus on. There are so many people who want to help us, help students, and it helps us focus and align the right resources at the right time.”

The state officials wanted to learn more about City Connects as it correlates with proposed wraparound services in the Ohio state budget. The $550 million proposal for wraparound services is being debated in the state senate.

During their visit, state officials met with current CJ faculty and staff including the school’s student support coordinators. Our Lady of the Rosary Principal Jacki Loffer ‘87 and Josh Richardt, the Early Childhood-Elementary Coordinator from Catholic Central in Springfield were also in attendance to speak about the implementation of City Connects at their schools.

“City Connects is one of the great equalizers of students coming to us with many needs and giving teachers the opportunity to teach their passion and allow a system, in this situation, a coordinator, manage the social/emotional barriers of learning,” added Marshall. “It eliminates the barriers where possible, mitigates the potential conflicts, which become frustrations for both students, parents and teachers, and allows for a smoother road for everyone to travel.”
