Joshua Cross '23 Takes Home National Art Award

More than 260,000 pieces of artwork were entered in the Scholastic Art and Writing Contest this past school year, of these less than 2,000 received a national award. Among this year’s top awards was “Is This Your Place?” submitted by Josh Cross ’23. His illustration won a Gold Key award in the Region, and a Silver Medal at the national level.

“I've learned a lot through this experience and through my journey as an artist. You really have to trust the process. I look at the first versions of the art that I've made and I'm like, that looks really bad. Instead of getting stuck in that thought, I trust the process and keep refining it until it's great. It's going to look bad at first but if you trust the process you can make a work of art,” said Cross.

Cross' artwork is published on the online gallery at artandwriting.org and will also be included in the Scholastics Art and Writing Awards Yearbook, which features works by National Medalists. He plans on pursuing digital art and graphic design as a career and will attend the Modern College of Design beginning in August 2023.
