Projects to Enhance Student Experience

Promote innovation and provide inspiration, recent awards from the Ohio STEM Learning Network (OSLN) will enable Chaminade Julienne educators to do both.
 
CJ is one of seven Montgomery County schools that recently received OSLN grants, funded by Battelle. Both Meg Draeger and Amanda Ooten received $5,000 grants for separate projects.
 
“CJ is very appreciative of Battelle's and OSLN's longstanding work and programs that support the work and learning of educators and students around Ohio,” Draeger said. “The OSLN Classroom Grant Program was a tremendous opportunity for our school to envision and propose innovative enhancements to our STEMM courses. We are grateful and excited to have been selected as grant recipients this year, and hope that the inaugural grant program will be deemed successful enough to continue in the future.”
 
The OSLN grants were awarded to create sustainable, STEM learning projects in public and private K-12 schools across 55 Ohio counties.
 
“The schools and educators awarded today will create powerful new experiences to amaze and inspire students,” said Kelly Gaier Evans, director of the Ohio STEM Learning Network. “We invest in these programs to foster the next generation of Ohio innovators.”
 
The CJ grants will help support two different projects with the purchase of a set of eight NeuroMaker kits and a subscription to the Nepris virtual career exploration network.
 
One Hand Fits All
Lifting Biomedical Science, Engineering, and Computer Science courses to New Heights with the NeuroMaker Hand Kit – will utilize a standards-aligned kit and curriculum to engage students in a hands-on learning experience that connects engineering, computer science, biology and biomedical engineering. The NeuroMaker Hand is a fully integrated kit that includes reusable hardware, curriculum, and web-based programming options. Students will gain fundamental knowledge in neuroscience, brain-machine interfaces, artificial intelligence, biomechanical concepts, and prosthetic design through guided presentations, hardware manipulation, research and sharing activities, and engagement with local professionals in the biomedical and prosthetics industries.
 
Sophomore SUCCESS - Students Using Career Connections to Explore STEMM Skills
This initiative will immerse students in STEMM careers and open their eyes to the vast opportunities that exist within these fields. Students will begin by exploring the 16 OhioMeansJobs career clusters, and their correlation to STEMM topics. Students will view and listen to both live and virtual guest speakers in several of the STEMM career clusters and, after each presentation, the students will reflect on the knowledge and skills required to be successful in that career field. The Nepris license will allow teacher-guided access to its extensive network of nationwide partners of practicing professionals and community resources.
 
“Chaminade Julienne continues to be a leader in STEMM and we are thrilled to have received these grants from the Ohio STEM Learning Network,” Ooten said. “These two projects will provide us with the newest resources to challenge our students' thinking. Students will simultaneously build and program a robotic hand, while exploring and immersing themselves in possible STEMM careers.”
