CJ Welcomes Carlos Stewart as Director of Mission and Inclusion

Fostering and expanding Chaminade Julienne’s Catholic mission in the traditions of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and the Marianists has long been a priority for the members of the CJ community. Intentionally forming authentic community and recognizing the goodness of God in our lives, gifts from the sponsoring religious congregations, provides a uniqueness to the CJ experience. To accelerate the efforts of teachers, staff members, coaches, and Trustees, the school created a new leadership position focused on mission and has hired Carlos Stewart as the first director of mission and inclusion.

 

Stewart is excited and enthusiastic for the opportunity.

 

“In the spirit of the Gospel call to discipleship, shaped by the charisms of the Sisters and the Marianists, this important work includes collaborative partnerships with the key stakeholders including the Board of Trustees, the president, the equity and inclusion working group, teachers, staff members, coaches, and students,” Stewart said. “I am looking forward to being a part of the commitment of the school community to strengthen CJ’s mission to more fully serve our students.”

 

Part of this effort includes enhancing the school’s sense of belonging for all students, providing opportunities for growth and development, and strengthening Chaminade Julienne’s diverse community of learners and teachers. “The director of mission and inclusion aims to lead the school’s efforts to create spaces where all persons have a true sense of value and love which is evidenced by the practice of respecting the dignity of one another as children of God,” Stewart said. 

 

Stewart most recently served as the senior associate director of development, diversity and access initiatives at the University of Dayton, responsible for establishing and managing a comprehensive fundraising program to support underrepresented students and programs that serve them. As part of his 16-year tenure at the university, he also worked in the Office of Multicultural Affairs, providing direct personal, cultural and academic support to the multicultural student population. While at UD, Carlos also led innovative cultural competence training experiences for faculty and staff, and initiated high impact community building initiatives for the entire campus community.

 

“As we consider the experience of our students, we have been working to ensure that all feel welcomed, all are included, and all are able to access everything that CJ has to offer,” said Dan Meixner ‘84, president. “To more fully activate our mission, we knew that we needed someone to shepherd all our efforts and serve as the lead caretaker for this work. Carlos’ skills and experience match well with CJ’s expectations for this role.”

 

He will support the efforts of the school’s Mission Integration Team and coordinate with the Mission Effectiveness Advisory Council of the Board of Trustees in all efforts to further the school’s Catholic identity in the traditions of the Sisters and the Marianists. 

 

Stewart will also advance the work of the equity and inclusion working group, assembled and engaged since the fall of 2020. “Carlos will work with this group to plan and implement equity and inclusion efforts consistent with our mission and our desire that CJ be a place of belonging for all students,” said Meixner.

 

“He will develop programs that inspire all members of the school community to learn about and work more intentionally to honor the dignity and sacredness of each person, leading to greater justice and peace.”

 

Stewart begins his new role at CJ effective August 1.
