April showers brought May flowers at Cox Arboretum MetroPark, with some help from the Chaminade Julienne Eagles.
About 30 CJ juniors participated in service opportunities with Five Rivers MetroParks during the 2021-22 school year, and several volunteered their time planting tulip bulbs in the fall. Their hard work resulted in a stunning spring display and a mention in the Five Rivers MetroParks May Volunteer Newsletter.
“The volunteers who supported the tulip project, including students from Chaminade Julienne High School, worked with our staff horticulturalist, Kelly Wood, and our horticulture technicians,” said Jenny Hyman, Five Rivers MetroParks volunteer service.
“They planted thousands of bulbs in October during service days including at Make a Difference Day where they were joined by public volunteers, Boy Scouts, and Big Hearts, Little Hands. The tulip display was a beautiful addition to Cox Arboretum's gardens drawing visitors from all over the region to take in the display.”
According to Kelli Kinnear, director of Ministry & Service, CJ’s relationship with the MetroParks goes back more than two decades.
“It is very beneficial,” Kinnear said. “With parks being all over the Dayton area, it's a great option for our students to get connected and serve our community, as there is at least one park near where anyone might live.
“It's especially helpful when we need to plan service projects for large groups; for example, athletic teams that want to do group service projects for Make a Difference Day. Five Rivers MetroParks has always been so great to work with – so accommodating.”
Volunteers are an essential part of the MetroParks mission. In 2021, more than 576 volunteers served 11,807 hours at a variety of volunteer opportunities in the MetroParks.
“Chaminade Julienne students have been coming out to support Five Rivers MetroParks for years, particularly students working on their junior religion service project,” Hymans said.
“These students serve volunteer hours in the community to inform their thesis project and many choose to serve their hours with us in the gardens, as ambassadors at our ice rink, or as program assistants at Adventure Central's after school program.”
